(James Buchanan)SKU 01649E
Small ferrotype sleeve button promoting James Buchanan for president, 1856. Just under 1/2" diameter, with original shank. There is a faint surface scratch on Buchanan's forehead, otherwise excellent condition and extremely rare. Copied from the photograph by Matthew Brady. A matching piece is also known to have been produced for Millard Fillmore in 1856. Since ferrotypes were invented around 1855, it is generally accepted that this button (and the matching Fillmore) are the first photographic campaign buttons ever made.
