Description
Pinback button celebrating the meeting of President William Howard Taft and Mexican President Porfirio Diaz October 16, 1909. Terrific 1 3/4" celluloid in bright, excellent condition with a ST. LOUIS BUTTON CO. inscription around the curl. The diplomatic meeting was intended to cement a sometimes fragile friendship between the two countries, and Taft wanted assurances that U. S investments in Mexico were secure. The press hailed the even as "a veritable pageant of military splendor, social brilliance, courtly formality, official protocol, and patriotic fervor." This marked the first ever meeting between a U.S. and Mexican President.
