Description
Pair of pinback buttons supporting the Democratic Party, and likely promoting Adlai Stevenson for president, 1956. The smaller example is a 1 3/4" cello in excellent condition with a Bastian Bros. Rochester, NY inscription around the curl. The larger example is a 3 1/2" cello in excellent condition. These buttons were made in response to a clearly anti-labor comment by Charlie Wilson, former President of General Motors and Secretary of Defense under President Eisenhower. In 1954, speaking about the plight of unemployed workers in Detroit, Wilson said: "Personally, I like bird dogs better than kennel-fed dogs. The bird dogs like to get out and hunt their food, but the kennel dogs just sit on the haunches and yelp." The Democrats jumped on the comment and produced these pinbacks.
