Description
Wooden pick handle twice signed by Lester Maddox and dated 3-15-73. 14 1/2" long. The signatures are a bit faded but this is in otherwise excellent condition. These were sold in Maddox's Pickrick Restaurant in Atlanta and at his souvenir shop, and symbolized his resistance to the civil rights movement, intended to scare African-Americans from his establishment. Maddox claimed he would shut down his chicken restaurant rather than serve Blacks. Maddox served as Governor of Georgia from 1967-1971 (and as Lt. Governor under Jimmy Carter). A souvenir from the ugly side of the civil rights movement.
