Description

Pinback button promoting August Gillhaus for president and Donald L. Munro for vice president, Socialist Labor Party, 1908. 1 1/4" cello in excellent condition with St. Louis Button Company backpaper. A key jugate from the early days of America's first Socialist party. An interesting note on the 1908 SLP campaign: the original presidential nominee was Morris R. Preston, a miner who was arrested on trumped-up murder charges during a citywide strike in Goldfield, Nevada. He served 10 years of a 20-year sentence before being released in 1917, and was pardoned posthumously by the Nevada Supreme Court in 1982.
