S.F. inscription around the curl. These odd pinbacks were issued by merchants to stimulate business by attracting "squares" to the Haight, and were mentioned in an article in the September, 1967 issue of Atlantic magazine, which described businesses in Haight-Ashbury: "The shops of the hip merchants were colorful and cordial. The straight merchants of Haight Street sold necessities, but the hip shops smelled of incense, the walls were hung with posters and paintings, and the counters were laden with thousands of items of nonutilitarian nonsense - metal jewelry, glass beads, underground magazines, photographs of old-time movie stars, colored chalk, kazoos, Halloween masks, odd bits of stained glass, and single shoes." $118.95This cardboard display placard contains twenty-four 7/8" "Keep US Out of War" celluloid pinbacks, urging neutrality and opposing America's involvement in the impending war. We purchased these from the grandson of the man who produced them in 1939, meant for distribution in the Philadelphia area. On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, these were quietly stashed, and remained so for over 60 years. A great find and a terrific display piece. Measures 8 1/2 x 11" overall.
