DEMOCRATIC TICKET FOR PRESIDENT JAMES BUCHANAN FOR VICE PRESIDENT JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE
Item # 2411
$219.95Electoral ticket promoting James Buchanan for president and John Breckinridge for vice president, 1856. Measures about 4 1/2 x 7 1/4" with jugate portraits of the candidates flanking an inscription: "Our Principle: The Constitution. The Sovereignty and equality of the States; The Repeal of the Missouri Restriction; The People of the Territories in forming State Governments to adopt their own institutions." Below is a list of of electors from each Congressional district in Virginia, and the instruction "Write your Name on the back of the Ticket". On the back, the name of a voter is signed in ink, indicating that this was actually taken to a polling place and cast as a ballot on election day.
Ranks as one of the most elaborate electoral tickets. The engraver - Ritchie & Dunnavant of Richmond, Virginia - later produced currency for the Confederate government. We have several of these, all hand trimmed (typical for these early tickets), and are offering them at a very reasonable price.
