FOR PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS... FOR VICE PRESIDENT ALEX. H. STEPHENS
Item # 2414
$194.95Virginia electoral ticket promoting Jefferson Davis for president and Alexander Stephens for vice president of the Confederate States of America, 1861. About 4 x 5 1/4". Lists electors for the state at large and for each Congressional district. On the back, the name of a Rebel voter is signed in ink or pencil, indicating that it was actually taken to a polling place and cast as a ballot on election day.
Though he opposed secession in principle, Jefferson Davis, formerly a U.S. Senator from Mississippi, was named provisional president of the Confederate government at its constitutional convention at Montgomery, Alabama, in February 1861. Davis was elected President to a six-year term the following November, and held the office until the fall of the Confederacy in April 1865. His Vice President, Alexander Stephens of Georgia, formerly a congressman, was a delegate to the state convention that voted for secession, and argued that African slavery was the cornerstone of the Confederacy.
Somewhat crudely hand-trimmed, as made. We have several of these and can offer them at a very tempting price.
Please note: Representative sample shown. Item shipped may vary slightly from example shown.
